EP 98 PREPPING KIDS FOR NEW BABIES, EARNING VS. REWARDING, QUIET TIME TIPS, & OUR FAVORITE LIFE HACKS

So many of the life hacks that we use in our lives every day to make it easier came from other people sharing them. In this episode, we answer several listener questions, including our very favorite life hacks that are saving us right now, from laundry and cleaning life savers to hair and easy morning breakfast tricks.

We also address issues about helping toddlers adapt to quiet time (one of our most frequent questions asked), preparing your older children to welcome a new baby into the family, and we discuss the important difference between systems of earning and rewards, bribes and punishments.

Books we mentioned:

Entitlement Trap // Richard and Linda Eyre

Fairplay // Eve Rodsky

Links we promised:

Taralyn’s hair curlers that she and Katelin sleep in. She now likes the first link best started with these ones, which are fabulous as well.

Felica’s black socks she uses for her boys.

Taralyn uses the KB no show socks (she and her 4 kids wear all just wear the same size for simplicity. You can buy a big pack from costco or a smaller pack from Amazon).

The recipes Taralyn uses to make her breakfasts easier:

Taralyn’s Overnight Oatmeal

1 TBS coconut oil

1 cup steel cut oats

4 cups water

Dash of cinnamon

Dash of nutmeg

Splash of vanilla

Rub the coconut oil around the bottom and edges of the crockpot and set it on warm overnight. (Or, if I forget, I can do it in the morning when I wake up and set it on highly for 2 hours and it’s ready when the kids get up).

  • Once it’s cooked, add options:

  • Milk or cream of your choice,

  • Sweetener of your choice (I like doing both raw honey and raw maple syrup)

  • Protein powder if you want it (I do Bulletproof’s collagen protein).

  • Fruit—blueberries, bananas, apples, whatever!

  • Sliced almonds if you like crunch (I do;)

  • Whipped cream

Just keep it on warm until ready to serve! Refrigerate whatever you don’t use and it reheats beautifully the next day (unlike rolled oats that turn to rubber).

Taralyn’s Crockpot Easy Egg Casserole Recipe

I can make this with just eggs and cheese and my kids are happy. You can make this however you want and add whatever you’d like:) you could probably toss spinach in the eggs but I haven’t tried that.)

2 TBS coconut oil

12 eggs (ish), beaten

Salt and pepper to taste

Veggies of any kind:

I like onions and peppers that I sauté in a little avocado oil ahead of time but you don’t need to)

Ham (or sausage:)

1/2 cup of cream of mushroom soup mixed with 1/4 cup milk

1/2 cup shredded cheese

Rub coconut oil along bottom and lower sides of crockpot. Pour veggies and meat in, then the salted and peppered beaten eggs on top.

I usually just put it in the fridge overnight and then turn it on high when I leave to workout in the morning and let it cook on high for an hour and a half. Then when get back, I follow the broiling instructions. You can also just cook it on low overnight.

After it has cooked, just toss on your mushroom soup mixture and cheese on top, and broil it in the oven (without the lid and outer electric part of course) for like 3 minutes or so, until the cheese gets golden and bubbly:)
